These genres are sometimes called “world music” when in compilations. The term bugs me because it doesn’t actually encompass the whole world. Besides, everything is “world music…” I hear similarities in these pieces that make me want to know more about the development of folk / pop music from the African continent and the Middle Eastern regions.
